Before my stay at Barton Creek Resort & Spa, I didn’t think that luxurious and family-friendly would fit it the same sentence. Boy, did they show me! Barton Creek Resort & Spa is located in the beautiful hill country of Texas with views of the rolling hills, green golf courses, thick beautiful live oaks and winding rivers. Barton Creek caters to every type of venue from romantic vacation destinations for couples, business conferences for companies, golfing enthusiasts, to family retreats. The resort has a prestigious air about it, using natural hardwood, granite, and stone throughout, and taking advantage of gorgeous views with floor to ceiling windows whenever it can. The guest rooms have hardwood entries, granite countertops, an oversize desk, and the most comfortable beds I’ve ever slept on.
The staff at Barton creek was an extension of family. There wasn’t any façade of snobbery among them. They were pleasant, knowledgeable, and quick to offer help or advice. Housekeeping came twice a day, both times to pick up the rooms, empty trash, leave chocolates on our pillows, and refill any items that needed it. The toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, bath gel, soap, and body lotion) in the bathroom that come complimentary were large 1oz. size sample products that are made specifically for the on-site 3 Springs Spa and are sold in larger containers there as well. They smelled delicious and left my hair and body silky smooth. Whenever we ordered room service or needed something delivered, say a port-a-crib, it showed up promptly and was delivered with a smile.
When I first checked the internet for family-friendly activities at Barton Creek, I was a little surprised that it only listed a few things (something they’ve changed recently). Upon arrival, I was given a pamphlet with family activities for the month. I was pleasantly surprised that there were many active things for our entire family to do. One of our favorites was the Family Scavenger Hunt. It led us through the entire resort checking in at a large majority of sites and familiarizing us with the grounds. We really enjoyed playing Putt-Putt golf on the miniature course that was mostly shaded and had a water jug and cups-a must for keeping hydrated and comfortable during Texas summers. The Putt-Putt course was also the start of the nature trail that wound about a ½ mile through the hill country wilderness. Along the path there was an old teepee that we explored along with a fort that my kids climbed into and played on. I liked the bridges going over a few water crossings, and was told that occasionally the deer will come up and stand close to you, allowing for excellent photo ops!
My kids really enjoyed Barton Kid’s Club. The staff takes safety as their number one priority, having a few forms for parents to fill out upon arrival, a 5-1 staff to kid ratio, or 1-1 staff to infant ratio without a change in price. All of the Kid’s Club Attendants are CPR & First Aid Certified as well. The Kid’s Club has a train set, large chalkboard, and a lot of different toys that keep kids happy. There are also crafts and occasionally outings the attendants might take the kids on around the resort. The attendants engage each child according to their needs and age, making their experience at the Kid’s Club fun and exciting. My kids didn’t want to leave!
If it’s too hot outside, the pools are a welcome relief. Barton Creek has a large pool for all ages, and keeps a few toys in the pool for families to play with. Among those items are water noodles, a volleyball and net, and beach balls. There is a shallow pool for toddlers to splash around in and a large hot tub tucked away in the corner and surrounded by a few waterfalls. There is a giant chess board for friendly chess competitions between family or new friends.
The pool cabana is located next to the pool, but don’t worry about leaving your spot, the friendly pool staff is on hand to take your orders and deliver those items to you without you having to leave your seat. I felt like a queen, being waited on hand and foot!
Besides the pool cabana, there are several wonderful dining options for your family. For breakfast our first morning there, we decided to give room service a try. We ordered two omelets, fruit, and toast which were delivered within the half hour, were perfect temperature, and was enough to fill our family of four.
We had lunch at 8212 Wine Bar and Grill, a reasonably priced lunch location for a resort of Barton Creek’s quality. The food was delicious and the portions were large enough to satisfy your appetite. I highly recommend the Fish Tacos, the Pork Carnitas Nachos, and the White Chocolate Bread Pudding for desert. The kid’s menu was standard and my kid’s loved their pizza and hamburgers. It was fun having a chance for them to use grown-up glasses and cloth napkins.
The following morning, we had the brunch buffet at the Hill Country Dining Room. I was amazed at the quality options for breakfast! There was a waffle station, an omelet station where you could custom order an omelet, as well as eggs, yogurt, bacon, sausage, biscuits & gravy, fresh fruit, toppings galore, and more. We sat next to the large windows overlooking the vast hill county and golf course. Our waitress was extremely friendly and talked to our kids as well as us. She seemed to really enjoy her job and made us feel very comfortable.
Every so often Barton Creek has special events for families. One of the big events is the Holiday Lights and Ice for Maggie’s Hope (a non-profit supporting autism support and awareness). For Holiday Lights and Ice, they turn the pavilion into an ice skating rink with skate rentals and outdoor bonfires pits with s’mores kits. It’s a fun family time that supports a very worthy cause!
Summer time is the premier time for families. Barton Creek has poolside activities, guided nature hikes, cowboy campfires, a family activity room with board games, Nintendo Wii, and arcade games, and movie nights. If I were to choose a specific time of the year to visit with my family, I would choose summer.
Another summertime event is Camp Barton. Camp Barton has day camp themes that are consistent each week. For example, one week they might focus their theme around dinosaurs, and the next will be around sports. No matter what week you choose to go, Camp Barton is sure to deliver a safe, positive environment for your children.
Barton Creek Resort & Spa is for anyone able to spend more on a luxurious, pampered vacation. They will make your stay as relaxing and fun as possible. Everyone we came in contact with had a smile on their face and made you feel like family. The prices for the Kid’s Club were reasonable and the dining options were first class and priced well for the location. This is a resort I will definitely be coming back too, it’s worth every penny!
