Susanna Wright was known as the “bluestocking of the Susquehanna,” but she was really more of a “Renaissance woman.” (Bluestocking was a derogatory term for an intellectual woman.)
At Wright’s Ferry Mansion you can get acquainted with this colorful but little-known character in American history. Wright operated a ferry here, drew up legal documents, raised silkworms, practiced medicine, and corresponded with people like Benjamin Franklin. The house also served as a station on the Underground Railroad.
