Tours are 30 minutes, so plan accordingly.
Designed by the first architect of the U.S. Capitol, Dr. William Thornton, this Georgian-style brick home and its grounds were a gift from George Washington to his nephew Major Lawrence Lewis and adopted daughter, Eleanor Parke Custis (“Nelly”).
Visitors can view the Washington and Lewis heirlooms and paintings from the federal period, and enjoy the colonial-revival garden, which features a large array of nineteenth-century rose species. There are programs throughout the year for families, such as Grandparents Day in the summer (when grandparents are admitted free) and a very popular Haunted History tour on Halloween (fee, reservations required).
Discount coupons for admission are available on the Web site, as are combination tickets for Woodlawn and the Pope-Leighey House.
