An easy drive from both Alexandria and Washington, D.C., Wolf Trap is the only national park for the performing arts. Performances are held at the Filene Center, an outdoor covered pavilion. The National Park Service also offers backstage tours of the Filene Center from October through April. Kids love the concerts, which range from classical to jazz, rock, and pop. Lawn seats allow kids running room (but arrive early with your picnic supper). The informal park atmosphere adds to the fun.
From July to August Wolf Trap features the Children’s Theatre-in-the-Woods program, with workshops that teach kids how to mime, act like a clown, and become a puppeteer. Each September Wolf Trap hosts the International Children’s Festival with outstanding performing artists, including puppeteers, magicians, and storytellers, and children’s theater productions.
