If your family includes a railroad buff or two, visit the Western Gateway Heritage State Park. An introductory thirty-minute video sets the tone; along with interesting tidbits about North Adams’s history (changing historical exhibits) as a bustling railroad town, you’ll learn about the construction of the Hoosac Tunnel. There are family programs throughout the year, a Kids Korner year-round with arts-and-crafts activities, and free weekly concerts in the park during the summer. Kids seem to like a working model railroad to scale depicting North Adams in the 1950s, the Junior Rangers Program, the Story and Crafts Hour, the children’s carnival and fair during the summer, and the kids videos in the winter.
