On the site where Wells Fargo first opened for business in 1852, this museum features a Concord Coach used by Wells Fargo in the 1860s and an impressive display of gold dust and ore from California’s Gold Country.
Connecting the bank’s history to the California Gold Rush and early San Francisco, on exhibit are an original 1868 Concord stagecoach, and gold coins and nuggets from
the Mother Lode. Kids can operate a telegraph station, handle historic artifacts, ride a replica stagecoach, and take an audio tour to hear stories and sounds of the Gold
Rush.
My kids love to visit the stagecoach when we are in downtown SF during the weekdays. It's a special adventure to go and see a real stagecoach, learn about a bank's history, as well as some of the history of SF. The kids love to go upstairs and actually get on the stagecoaches and pretend they are on an adventure of their own. Well worth the visit if your in downtown SF in the middle of the week with your kids.
I just love the Wells Fargo Museum. It is located in the financial district and is only open on week-days. Kids get to see a real stagecoach, learn about gold, solve a mystery, and upstairs they get to ride in a mock-up stagecoach. Tell the kids to ask for the questionnaire, if they answer all the questions while visiting the museum, they will get a small prize. It is a great opportunity to learn more about the bank, the transportation of money and people, and it is a great tribute to the wild west. Children and grow-ups will have a great time.
