This one hundred yar old park is one of Denver's largest. Enjoy the lake, tennis courts, basketball court, and horseshoe pits. Grills are available for picnics.
If you're looking for a nice place to spend the afternoon in Denver, you can't miss with Wash Park. Tons of green space to run around in, shady spots to take a rest, and two playgrounds to explore. The big wooden play structure near the lake was our favorite - bridges, slides, tunnels, poles, even a zip line and more!
When it comes to Washington Park I am a bit biased, my mom grew up here and I spent many days as a kid playing in this park with my grandparents. Returning to Washington Park with my kids always reminds me why this is one of my favorite parks in the Denver area.
Whether it is in the summer or the winter, Washington Park is a great place to take the kids to feed ducks or geese (don't forget to take stale bread), play in the grass, climb on playgrounds, ride their bikes and so on. It seems like around every turn is something different - the lake is the central attraction, even though the boathouse is a tad rundown. There are gardens aplenty and music in the park nights in the summer, as well as community sporting events and activities year round.
We can easily spend 4-5 hours in this park just walking around, playing in different areas and looking at what nature has to provide. I suggest taking food and water if you are going to be there for an extended time. While there are vending machines around the pool area, there aren't a lot of food opportunities and the park is really large (in other words, we are never near the food when the kids are hungry). Don't forget sunscreen, no matter the time of year, even though the park has good shade, the kids aren't going to want to hang out under the trees...although in the trees is a different story. There are bathrooms although you may want to scope this out as you wander around, I have time to time come across bathrooms that were closed for one reason or another.
The surrounding neighborhood is very quaint and offers many dining and other entertainment opportunities. If you plan on doing other things in the Washington Park area during your visit, make sure you research the neighborhood ahead of time. It can be difficult finding the places you want to go most by just wandering around.
