We recently spent 2 days at Warren Dunes State Park. We absolutely loved it there. Located on Red Arrow Hwy in Sawyer, Michigan, it was less than 10 minutes from where we were staying and it is only about 1 1/2 hours from Chicago. It cost $8 per day per car with out of state license plates. It was such a beautiful beach, and I felt very safe there. Patrolmen in four wheel vehicles made their rounds quite often. There were also 2 bath houses, one concession stand, and plenty of parking. The park also has a campground with sites for both tents and trailers/RV's.
We really enjoyed our time at this beach and recommend it to those who are traveling in that area. And, as I said earlier, it is not too far from Chicago. So if you are planning a day at the beach with your family, check out Warren Dunes State Park. My family has visited here dozens of times. It is a beautiful beach and a fun place to swim. The dunes are really fun to climb; just be careful of younger kids. When I was growing up, my younger sister decided to run down the dune. She ended up summersaulting all the way down. She was ok, but ate a lot of sand! We have not camped here, but would like to sometime.
I've been going to this state park since I can remember. My parents and grandparents would take us kids here almost every summer. A great place to camp! The best park about this park is their very large and clean beach. One of the largest beaches in the area. Nothing can beat the HUGE sand dune on your right as you enter the beach area. I just love taking people here for the first time. Every time we turn the corner to enter the parking lot you hear them say "Woooo...Oh my gosh...look how huge that sand hill is!" No one has ever seen a sand hill quite so large. It takes at least 10-15 mins to climb up. Once you are at the top the view is breath taking. This park is a MUST see place!!
When you first arrive at the beach at Warren Dunes, the first thing you notice is the giant sand dune to the west. The trek up the dune can be a little duanting but the real fun is running down. The beach is soft sand, clean and full of families. There is a concession stand and a gift shop, but most people bring a cooler with their lunch. Camping is also available, but we only spent the day. Admission to the state park is $8 per vehicle if you are not camping. Rates vary for campers. More information can be found at: http://www.michigandnr.com/ParksandTrails/Details.aspx?id=504&type=SPRK
My children were so excited to walk on sand. it is interesting experience to walk up sand hills. Try four wheel ride. Kids loved them. It is just sand but you may feel great adventure in this park. you could enjoy some defferent kinds of plants.
When you're in the area, check out this state park. It's fabulous. Fresh water sand dunes on Lake Michigan. And you can't beat the sunsets on Lake Michigan from this state. The park has 1,950-acres. There's six miles of hiking trails, a campground with tent, RV camping, and mini-cabins. Don't bring your dog if you have one because they aren't allowed. Minimal parking fee: $6 for Michigan license plates and $8 for out-of-state plates. The giant sand dune is perfectly designed to exhaust the most ACTIVE of kids.
