Wall Drug is a giant tourist trap; but still worth your time investment. The signs pointing the way will most likely garner the attention of your young kiddos so you will just have to get out and stretch your legs at this famous resting stop.
Free ice water, $.05 coffee, a plethora of fun souvenirs (I purchased some fantastic moccasins!) as well as tons of climbing structures to take pics on, a restaurant, ice cream and even a few water play areas make this a rest stop full of opportunity!
We visited Wall drug on my all time favorite family vacation. We spent several hours there, and still didn't see it all. There truly is something for everyone! A lot of the amusements are refreshingly old fashioned, and neat for all ages. You're bound to find something here to entertain every person in your group!
This place is HUGE so be sure you have a bit of time to spend. Just the sheer size is worth seeing. There are some pretty funny, weird, nice, neat and tacky things at this store. It is a wide variety. The jackalope is fun as is the dinasour. The store was pretty busy since it is a huge attraction, and just to visit is free. You can shop, eat and get your photo taken with all sorts of things. Not sure I'd go back but worth the trip if your in the area. Lots for kids to do and see.
While I really enjoy Wall Drug and I look forward to taking our children there someday, it's not for now! Our children are all young, under 4, and the isles are narrow with lots of touristy stuff on them. And some of the items are pricey if your child drops it! It is definitely a great stop if your children are a little older though and you don't need a stroller. I am looking foward to returning sometime after our children are a little older.
Wall Drug is a great place to stop on your way to Rushmore, Yellowstone, etc... This is the ultimate tourist trap! They have all kinds of trinkety things, but it reminds you of a rustic, old west kind of shopping. Great place to get black hills gold and a buffalo burger. A little place to stop in the middle of nowhere.
It's been 11 years since I was there, but I can't wait to take my kids someday! What a little gem this place is! We will take a family vacation to SD just for this little store...it's history, it's fun, it's entertaining! Really, it's worth the trip to SD just to say you went to Wall Drug!
Wall Drug is an iconic landmark. While the family enjoyed it and it was a rite of passage, it lacked a certain appeal after 20 minutes. The kids enjoyed running around the rooms of semi-tacky souvenirs. The food was great and cheap. The kids especially enjoyed pointing out all the wall drug stickers they saw on the way to and from Wall Drug.
I've seen many of the Wall Drug bumper stickers but never knew how fun this place was until we stopped in 2005. First, count the license plates in the lot-we found over 30 states without much effort. The chocalate shakes were thick and yummy, served by a young lady from Russia-the gifts and attractions were a blast for our kids.
The restaurant food was really good, the homemade ice cream was yummy with interesting flavors. There are tons of different stores in a building that takes up almost an entire block. Our kids, 8, 6, 4 had a great time choosing souvenirs to buy with the money they had saved. It was tricky to navigate with a stroller and our 20 month old really wanted to get down and touch everything, but it was worth the stop. Customer service is a high priority here as evidenced with a helpful clerk who gave us a good price on a treasure box with no price tag, and a bus person who saved my daughter's wallet!
When I was taking a road trip after I graduated college we had a rule, if there are more than ten signs about the same thing, we had to stop. Wall Drug certainly fit this criteria. We weren't sure what to expect but we obviously weren't the only ones who felt compelled to stop. We were traveling through South Dakota during the Sturgis biker rally so the place was packed with bikers (who are truly some of the nicest people on the planet). There was just so much to see. There was a cute little area in the courtyard for kids to explore and take silly pictures of their heads sticking out of crazy painted displays. There was black hills gold jewelery and biker gear and native american artwork and basically anything else you could possibly think of that could be remotely associated with the area. There is food and ice cream. It was alot of fun. I think if you are diriving through this part of SD you just HAVE TO stop here. Perfect pit stop.
This was such a great place. There is over a mile long of shops and neat old western shops. There are reenactments of old time western fights and they really put on a show in the middle of the street. You can get an old time picture made too, which is lots of fun to dress up.
Ok this is a total tourist trap, it is a crazy, kitschy place full of crazy, kitschy stuff. But, it is a nice break when traveling through this area. It will make you laugh and spark some fun conversations. It is one of the more unique places you will visit.
An interesting place to visit. It really is a tourist trap but at least it is a fun tourist trap. It is filled with lots of different types of stores. There is no taste left out. Five cent coffee, food, ice cream, western wear, jewelry, and even a pharmacy.
I had never heard of wall drug, but as soon as you get within 100 miles of Wall Drug, you'll start to see signs that advertise 5 cent coffee, free cold water (in the heat of summer...that sounds VERY attractive), zoo...you name it. The signs get more and more crazy. So, we couldn't resist. We had to see what was up at Wall Drug and it's one of our fondest memories of South Dakota. I think it started out as a drug store, but soon all the little side attractions started to take on a life of it's own. There is a full on restaurant and lots of activities for the kiddos. It's a really bizzare (in a good way) sort of place that you don't want to miss. The kids will love it.
Wall Drug is a place you just have to stop if you are driving between the Badlands and Rapid City. You can't miss the myriad of signs along the road, and this piece of kitchy Americana is just begging to be explored! We loved the giant ride-on Jackalope!! Also, the roaring t-rex, the puppets, and all sorts of crazy stuff! We had rootbeer floats at the soda fountain and just tried to soak it all in. Yes, it is crazy, but SO fun!
