Organic farm where your family can pick strawberries and other fresh produce. There's a homemade ice cream shop on-site as well as a 40 acre playground called the Back Forty. The Back Forty requires an admission fee of $15/person and includes access to a huge pumpkin jump, zip lines, hayrides, and 2 large play structures.
What a wonderful summer activity for kids and berry-lovers of all ages! We visited a little after "peak" season, yet there were still plenty of juicy, beautiful strawberries to choose from. Moreover, the blueberries were just coming into season. Since they plant a variety of blueberries, the season will last for a while and we look forward to returning for more blueberries. The ones we picked are already gone!
The blueberries and strawberries are USDA certified organic. It is very difficult to find a "pick your own" berry farm in this area that doesn't use pesticides. Moreover, their clean and tidy market area offers a variety of other organic fruits and veges, jams, jellies, relishes, pickles, and even some locally raised meats.
And did I mention the ice cream parlor? 8 flavors of homemade ice cream. I'd recommend strawberry! You can sit in the shade on a picnic bench or enjoy your ice cream while your children play on the wonderful park complete with a wooden boat, an airplane, and "saddle" style swings!
Don't miss Vollmer Farm. It is worth the drive. Just 30-40 minutes outside of Raleigh for a day of fun and some healthy, reasonably priced organic fruits! We'll be going back several times this summer!
Beyond the delicious organically grown strawberries at Vollmer Farm, there's a homemade ice cream parlor, a tractor-pulled barrel rides, baby goats, an airplane to climb around in and a couple of swings for kids to play on.
The BackForty Playground is open from September through October and we got to visit last fall. They have a huge blob that the kids and adults can jump on that's really fun. I think I burned a good 5 pounds trying to jump up and down on that thing without sliding off. For the $15 admission, there's a lot to do. Admission is free for kids under 2 since many of them might be afraid of the rides and games. A great place to come and enjoy the autumn season with the kids.
