I have been to Virginia Beach plenty of times but I have never taken time out to walk the whole entire Boardwalk at the being of the Boardwalk is where Grommet Island Park is and where the first hotel is located called the Schooner Inn Hotel as you walk the boardwalk you can get a a feel of the whole beach area. I think toward the end of the board walk it's less people so if that's your preference you might want to get a hotel room towards that way. The boardwalk start at 2 and ends at 40. that's also where the condomiums are located. They are building new hotels around the 35 street location which is due to open next spring. The sand feels different going towards the end of the boardwalk also. It's around a 3 mile stretch very enjoyable. My four year old daughter wanted to rent a bike to ride on the boardwalk but got a little upset because her legs were too short for her to peddle.
This is one of my favorite places. I lived there briefly and go back to visit every spring. The city really does a great job of keeping this beach clean. Every morning you can find new shells washed up. Parking isn't too bad for a beach town. Also, you can rent bikes and bike up and down the boardwalk. Lots of restaurants all around to choose from. Very kid-friendly beach. You will see lots of familys spending the day here. Some light surfing. Great for beginners.
My family loves the beach, and this beach most of all! I think one of my favorite things about this place is that is not only family friendly, but discourages riff raff and "un" family behavior. It is always clean, there is always some sort of music going on, or bikes to ride, or beaches to play on. There is even some playground equipment ON the beach! We love it here, and return year after year!
The kids really enjoy just walking on the boardwalk, and looking for familiar landmarks, like the Dairy Queen, or King Neptune. Very family friendly, take a a stroller or bike or something to push tired kids. (Because they WILL get tired, the boardwalk is some 3 miles long!)
Oh, the joys of spending time on the Boardwalk. Our family loves to ride bikes or walk on the boardwalk during the summer. It's just something about walking on a boardwalk close to the ocean (very peaceful and relaxing) and a great way to spend some quality family time. We have never had any problems while at the boardwalk, it has always been a very enjoyable experience. There are plenty of fun restaurants (Dairy Queen is our fav) and shops, as well as a playground right on the beach.
The Virginia Beach boardwalk is clean and well-kept. There are plenty of fun restaurants and shops, as well as a playground right on the beach. There are even some nice seafood places with a variety of foods. Tends to get very crowded in the summertime, so you may want to check out the beaches a little bit north of the actual boardwalk. Some evenings there are fireworks, and especially on weekends there are some great live entertainers along the boardwalk.
The Virginia Beach Boardwalk has been voted one of the best in the U.S., and there's many reasons for it.
First, it is well-designed. There is a separate lane for those riding bikes so they don't collide with the pedestrians. It is nicely maintained (the boards are not rotting or falling apart like some other Boardwalks). One of the town rules is no cussing or bad language, which I suppose is difficult to enforce, but is a nice concept.
The Boardwalk is very clean, with decent showers and places to rinse sand. Most of the souvenir shops are on Atlantic Blvd., which is the first street closest to the beach -- but not on the actual Boardwalk itself.
There is a fishing pier, which costs $2 to walk out on, or $8 to actually fish or crab.
There are some ice cream vendors and such, but most of that is located on Atlantic Ave., not on the Boardwalk.
Families can rent large bicycles that hold numerous people, and there are seats at the front for small kids (like the seats you find on grocery store carts).
Along the Boardwalk, you will come across several playground areas, as well as Neptune's statue, which allows for some great photo opps.
I highly recommend checking out the Boardwalk at least once while you are visiting the Hampton Roads area!
Very clean, very nice boardwalk. Nice and safe to walk with kids since there's a far distance to the water and no street traffic nearby. Plenty of benches to rest on, playgrounds along the way, and a wonderful playground at the end. LOVED it - will definately visit again.
The boardwalk is a great place to just take a walk day or night and they also have a bike trail where you can ride a bike or skate or even if you want rent a bike car and do that with the family that is alot of fun as well they also have single bikes that you can rent and ride up and down the boardwalk with the ocean breeze blowing!!!
This is truly one of the best boardwalks I've been to! There's everything from hotels, to tourist shops (lots and lots of them!), arcades, candy stores, and so much more. Very relaxing to walk along the boardwalk with the kids and watch to sunset, we all love it!
