There is nothing more spectacular than the Wall in D.C. It will really take your breathe away. I recommend making time to stop and see this wall. And if you have time, stop by and see it at night when it's all lit up. It is inspiring and you can never grasp the sheer magnitude of it until you are standing face to face with it.
It seems odd to give this five stars. However, I traveled here with three teens, all of whom are from military families. We were so moved by the reverence displayed by those around us. A great opprotunity to engauge teens in conversation about our nations history and loss of life. We will never forget the experience.
The wall was an amazing place to visit. I went in December, close to Christmas, and there was a Christmas tree on the path of the Wall. There were a lot of ornaments hanging on the tree that were from places like California where students had made them. Some had pictures of active military members, some overseas. Other ones had pictures of veterans, or those deceased who had once fought. It was incredible.
We couldn't leave DC without making sure we visited the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. It is simple, yet beautiful and touching. No matter the date or time of day, you will always encounter someone looking for a relative or a comrade. Hint: if you are looking for a name, you should find out what section they are in before heading to the mall.
This is an excellent opportunity to teach your children about the Viet Nam War. The wall is impressive & overwhelming. It is so simplistic in its design, yet as you look closely, you are overwhelmed by the sheer number of names engraved there. If you know somebody on the wall, there is a very user-friendly system for looking them up. They will give your the exact location of the name so you can photograph it & do a pencil rubbing.
