The Van Wezel's first production, Fiddler on the Roof, opened in 1970 and was later renovated in 2000. The Van Wezel offers a wide variety of performances and can also be rented for meetings and special events.
The purple performing arts hall is a Sarasota landmark on Sarasota's bayfront and can be seen from the John Ringling Causeway bridge.
The Van Wezel is a Sarasota landmark. The building is shaped like a large purple shell and overlooks Sarasota's bayfront but the real magic happens on stage! We've seen everything from debutante parties to high school band and orchestra concerts to Broadway shows at this local treasure. The new Family Broadway series helps families attend shows together by offering free tickets to children when a full price adult ticket is purchased. There's even an after show meet and greet with the artists and a cake and punch reception. Check their website for the latest show offerings. You'll be glad that you did!
Downtown Sarasota is known for its theaters and art galleries. Most is high-browstuff, opera and experimental. For something more kid-friendly, head to the monthly Saturday kids’ show, November through April. The hall itself, in the shape of a purple scallop shell, exudes a bit of circus razzamatazz and Big Top drama.
