Tour routes involve climbing stairways. The main deck (Hangar Deck), pier, and the Mega Theater are handicap-accessible. The Ship's Store, the Mess Deck, and restrooms are also accessible. Admission is free for wheelchairs.
My husband and I went here pre-kids and we plan on taking the kids once they get a little older. See everything from planes on the top decks, to the bunks, to the galley, to where the elevator is, to the barber shop, the dentist and the on-board work areas. Lots of walking and climbing but so much fun for kids to see and re-live days on this gigantic battleship.
I went to this 8 months pregnant and climbed, and climbed and climbed. I can't imagine doing it with a stroller or toddlers. This is a fantastic site - especially if you've got kiddos interested in air combat/naval operations. The planes on deck are so cool. It was warm and we went in November. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes!
This was a very neat place to visit. However if you don't like stairs or neeed a stroller then may not be the visit for you. We enjoyed it but my husband had to carry our small child up & down several flights of stairs throughout the trip. Other then that we thought the ship was very interesting and would go back again.
We had a great time at the USS Lexington. There were many, many things to see. Many tours through the aircraft carrier and also many aircraft to see. The only advice is to not go during the heat of the day. Many of the tours through the Lexington are very hot. Also it is not a great place for a stroller.
The first thing to note is this is not an attraction where children who require a lot of time in a stroller, or being carried, is practical. There aren't any elevators, or escalators, and the stairs are often quite vertical. That said, it's a great time for children who can maneuver the stairs and the adults who have the stamina to keep up with them. There is so much history in that ship and it's a real education every time you step on board.
This is a great activity for kids over 4 or 5. There are really cool older aircraft on the deck of the ship. Our kids LOVE planes and helicopters so this is a great place for them to visit. It's a little hard to relax and be completely comfortable with them up there because they're so small but it's worth it to see them so excited!
The USS Lexington Museum is a fascinating tour for any family. This old aircraft carrier is steeped in history; it served longer than any other U.S. Navy carrier. Tours run all over the ship, including the bridge, the engine room, and the flight deck full of vintage planes. Several maritime exhibits and multimedia programs are also on display.
