Union Square is the heart of San Francisco's downtown shopping district.
so big apple have time square. SF got union square (okay fine NY got union square too whatever). it is customary every year that they have a big oh i mean gigantic Christmas tree here. Then macy's got the giant wreath. You can sit around and just hang (summer time under the sun) or take lotsa picture and go crazy with it (holiday season decorations) one corner you got nike, another disney store. some of well known designer boutique, then saks fifth, or macys. outdoor skating rink in winter, no snow, no problem. They also got a double decker tour bus. However, i suggest just walk around the neighborhood. in winter, prepare for rain coat and boots. sometimes you got flurries, then you're lucky. do not use your ugg or non waterproof shoes, you'll cry or get a near frostbite due to rain plus windchill that might reach below zero, celcius that is. hop to cable car that pass on powell street and you wont miss it.
If you want to go shopping for your family and your kids, it's a good place to go. You can visit Macy's, Gap, ... just close to Union square and Powell bart station. Very convenient and easy to visit. In the Christmas time, you can also take your family there to take pictures of the big Christmas tree and to enjoy ice-skating.
However, it's too over-crowded, so sometimes, you will feel tired a bit.
Mommy definitely enjoyed the shopping and beautiful buildings but the kiddies didn't have such a great time. I would highly recommended san francisco and union square but it is definitely more of a place for grown ups. Though they do have some good restaurants with great kids menus. What my children didn't seem to enjoy was almost always being in the strollers on on daddies shoulders. This part of town is just so crowded and I really don't feel safe with my little ones walking just holding our hands. Children ages 12 and up would probably enjoy this place and might even want to shop around with their moms!
When you are in Union Square, you are in the center of San Francisco. The Square is very pleasant to sit at and enjoy a drink. It is the starting place of many things to do in San Francisco. You are a mere blocks away from the start of the cable car, the Westfield mall with the stores and theaters, the Metreon center, the SF MOMA, the Jewish Museum and much more. For Christmas, it is beautifully decorated and there is a ice-skating rink to enjoy!
