Union square park is located in midtown and has a nice children's playground. Lots of retail stores are also located around the park.
Both of my kids love to play at the playground. The play equipment is the boring, standard playground fare, but much more imaginative. We also enjoy walking around the farmer's market that surrounds the square, pick up some fresh food and sit down to have a snack. Visiting Books of Wonder while we are in the area is also a favorite treat.
14th St. playground is tucked away below ground/Union Square level and surrounded by trees. For us, it was an accidental find as we walked around the square. We're glad we found it, though.
After looking at the dogs in the dog park, we walked into the play area. First stop was the swings, followed by a play in the sandpit and a look at the toddler area. My son, a mini daredevil, decided the open-ended play area for bigger kids included him, too, and he marched off to find equipment to play on.
Thankfully, there is no shortage.
Much of the equipment is the new-fangled open-end play stuff, so there are odd climbing bars, a tunnel-slide and a huge dome to clamber on and over. They also have the requisite slides and some cool listening tubes and a cute track that takes the kids past the huge dome.
The whole area is fenced in, another plus in our books given the busy city streets that surround the park.
There are a couple of carts selling food so you can grab lunch on the run.
On the negative side, we had to watch our kid fairly closely given that some kids playing there were rather rough for our liking, pulling each other off the dome and climbing on top of the tunnel slide.
This midtown park and playground are delightful. It's not just easy to get to because there is a subway stop right underneath it, but the park is surrounded by beautiful buildings and a good number of stores including Babies R Us.
The playground is absolutely delightful. Fully fenced in with a toddler and bigger kid's section that are divided by a fence, but connected. That means your older kids could be off in their playground while you're watching your toddler in the toddler playground quite easily. The playground equipment looks fairly new with some really fun whimsical looking equipment. It just feels like a very safe playground.
On some days there is a farmer's market right in the park and we were delighted to bump into it. It made for such a fun trip to the park both for me and the kids. There are nice clean bathrooms right opposite the playground at the Barnes and Nobles, which also has a fantastic children's' books section, so if you want to weave in some reading after running around, this is a great stop.
At the corner of 17th and Union West, there is a fantastic middle eastern food truck called Rafiqi's Food Truck. It serves awesome middle eastern favorites - gyros, falafels, grilled chicken, etc. So, if you need a bite for lunch, pick up a gyro pita and pick a bench to picnic on.
We stopped by the Farmer's Market at Union Square and had some fruit samples and picked up some yummy apples to take with us. The Farmer's Market takes place on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 8am-6pm. Interesting art vendors were at Union Square, too.
We also stopped by the playground to let our kiddos blow off some steam. Great playground with 3 different play areas for different age groups. We stayed mostly in the toddler area where my son enjoyed the sandbox and my daughter liked the swings. The other older kid play areas had really cool climbing and spinning structures. We were at the playground between 4 and 5 pm on a weekday and it was a bit crowded with families and nannies.
Lots of great vendors, a nice little sand park, live performances, cool t-shirt vendors, surrounded by lots of hip shops and restaurants (for bathroom breaks and weather escapes). Easily accessible by subway.
Great place to take a break, people-watch, buy a meal and sit outside, or buy some interesting trickets or T-shirts.
