Turtle River State Park is only 20 miles from Grand Forks which makes it very convenient to go there with kids for a day of fun. There are varieties of activities you can do there: camping, picnicking, fishing, hiking, mountain biking. It is not very suitable for swimming. However, it is a perfect place for a picnic. We used to take our kids there for a nature hunt. It is very educational. Depending on the season you can get different plants for a herbarium. Also in the winter (which is very long in ND) you can go there for cross country skiing. Children love to ski there because it is not too busy.
Turtle River State Park is just 22 miles west of Grand Forks and is situated along a heavily-wooded valley. Would you like your kids to see North Dakota wildlife? Then this is the place! Excellent for birdwatching, hiking, and picnics.
We love it, but make sure to bring bug spray in the summer, super warm coats in the winter...
From the Greater Grand Forks Visitors Bureau website:
This 784-acre park is a vivid contrast to the open farmland that dominates eastern North Dakota. The river was named for the mud and snapper turtles once found in abundance in the streams. Today, the entire park is a natural sanctuary harboring an abundance of plant and animal life. The wetland is a haven for birds and migratory waterfowl. The park has 125 modern and primitive campsites, a woodland lodge and group cabins, a mountain bike trail, self-guided nature trails, fishing for rainbow trout and special programs presented in an outdoor amphitheater. Winter activities include cross-country skiing, sledding and more.
