Thirteen miles long, a mile wide, and shallow, Tomales Bay is a quiet finger of water surrounded by acres of mudflats and salt and freshwater marshes. Commercial oyster
farms line the eastern shore. More than one hundred species of resident and migrating waterbirds are the reason you’ll see anorak-clad, binocular-braced birdwatchers
at pullouts on Highway 1 along the shore. Four beaches, hiking trails, and picnic areas. Heart’s Desire Beach is a wind-protected, easily accessible beach, great for swimming, sailboarding, kayaking, and clam digging; picnic tables and 6 miles of easy-to-moderate trails.
