Thunder Hole lets you view thunderous waves crashing against the rocky shores, aside from the calm days. Thunder Hole was created naturally, being carved from the rocks where the waves run in to it. Water spouts can reach as high as 40 feet causing a loud noise, part of the reason for the name 'Thunderous Hole'.
Programs will be given rain or shine. Passengers should dress in layers and be prepared for changeable weather.
This is a really great place to visit, lots of hiking and a beautiful view of the ocean. Thunder hole is definitely worth it, and because of its rock formation the waves make a thundering noise, when the come rolling in. There are lots of scenic trails to hike as well
If you are driving or hiking through Acadia National Park, you must stop and see Thunder Hole. We were amazed to see this impressive natural wonder - one of the many that are to be seen in this pristine land. You can get amazingly close to this incredible thundering hole, and if you visit at just the right time, you might just get a little wet, too!
The view is beautiful from Thunder Hole. The hole itself can be pretty impressive if you get there before a storm or when the tide starts coming back in. It can boom and spray you which the kids like. Hold on to your kiddos though. I know of at least one incident where a child was standing there and a wave caught her and took her into the ocean.
This is just one of the many wonders of Acadia. Timing really is everything in viewing this wonderous sight though, the best time to go is during high tide. The water comes into the channel and traps air, which creates a thunderous boom when it escapes along with a spray of water.
While we didn't see Thunder Hole at it's absolute peak and it only let out grumbles for us instead of booms, we were still able to experience it's effect and beauty.
There are steps leading down to the site and a viewing platform. Just across Park Loop Road from Thunder Hole is a parking lot with bahtrooms and a small gift shop.
Need to go during high tide or after a storm to get the full affect but pretty cool anytime... can hike, bike, take the free bus from town or drive right up to thunder hole. We hiked to it... Beautiful trail along the coast leading up to it. A must see in Acadia.
