For the automobile lover, William E. Swigart, Jr. built up a collection of about 150 cars, of which 30 to 35 are on display at the museum at one time. Some are one-of-a-kind, such as the 1936 Duesenberg 12 cylinder Gentlemen’s Speedster, the 1920 Carroll, and the 1916 Scripps-Booth.
The Museum is open to the public daily from 9:00 until 5:00, Memorial Day through October 31.
This museum is the oldest automobile museum in America, established by the late W. Emmert Swigart in 1920. William E. Swigart Jr. continued the collection upon his father’s death in 1949. The Swigart collection emphasizes the era when America was first becoming a mobile society. Featured cars include its newest acquisition, a 1909 Overland; a 1900 Winton; a 1904 Rambler; and the only remaining Carroll. Other highlights include two Tuckers and Herbie, the “Love Bug.” About thirty-five cars from the collection of 200 are on display at any given time. Supporting these is an outstanding collection of license plates and name plates. Children will enjoy seeing the exhibits of antique toys, trains, and bicycles. In August the museum and the local chapter of the Antique Automobile Club of America sponsor the Swigart Museum Meet.
