Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the Salem Cross Inn is named for the hex mark on the front door latch that was placed there to fend off witchcraft when the building was erected in 1720.
It was built by a grandson of Peregrine White, the only baby born on the Mayflower while in Plymouth Harbor. The 600-acre property is a working farm. In winter sleigh rides are offered with the Fireplace Feasts. Hayrides are offered with the Drover Roasts in the warmer months, and hiking is allowed. The dining room menu changes with the season.
During the winter, roasts are cooked on a roasting jack (the only one remaining in the country), and breadsare baked in an original beehive oven. A spring or summer evening might feature a roast cooked outdoors over a pit, served with chowder. Special Family Days take place throughout the year; call for dates.
