Here in Washington, you’ll find the only museum where you can see, learn about, and actually ride historic electric-rail vehicles from Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Johnstown, and other cities. Take several generations along for an opportunity for reminiscing and intergenerational storytelling.
First go to the visitor education center to buy your tickets and view an exhibit. Stop and browse through the exhibits or take in a film. During the winter holidays you can even find yourself at the controls of a model-train layout.
Rides leave from the Richfor Shelter across the picnic area and next to the car barn. You just won’t believe how beautifully these streetcars have been restored. Your motorman and most of the staff are volunteers. You’ll clatter on a 3-mile journey past a scenic section that was once an old coal-mining railroad. After you climb off the trolley, you may view about twenty-five trolley cars from the museum’s collection, including the real “Streetcar Named Desire” from New Orleans. You can even peek in on the car shop where volunteers restore the cars. Bring along a picnic lunch if you like.
Just 25 miles southwest of Pittsburgh, off I–79, exit 41 southbound or exit 40 northbound, the trolley museum is convenient to Meadowcroft Village in Avella. Special events include: the Anything on Wheels Fair in June, with a trolley parade, antique vehicle display, and motorcar and caboose rides; the Pumpkin Patch Trolley in October; and the Santa Trolley in December.
