Asked what kids like best about his museum, Thomas McBride answers, “It’s a real jailand it’s spooky. Real ‘bad guys’ were here!” Indeed, this building served as the Cabon County jail from 1871 to January 1995. It was also the site of the hanging of the Molly Maguires. Purchased by Thomas and Betty Lou McBride in 1995, it has now been preserved as a museum. Tour guides take visitors through the kitchen, cell blocks, and even down to the dungeon, where prisoners were kept in solitary cofinement. Yes, it’s a bit spooky, but there are lessons to be learned here. Older kids especially seem fascinated. Look for the “mysterious handprint” left by a prisoner in 1871. No matter how many times the room is repainted, the ghostly handprint always bleeds through!
