The Lyceum, also known as Alexandria's History Museum is a Greek-revival structure built in 1839 and used as a hospital in the Civil War. The Lyceum houses 300 years of historical items, such as Civil War artifacts, photos, ceramics, furniture, and nineteenth-century stoneware. In the South Gallery, materals are provided for children to color pictures of colonial life and draw maps of Alexandria. The gift shop has a nice selection of children’s books explaining colonial life and heroes.
The Alexandria Confederate Memorial is just outside the Lyceum at the intersection of Prince and South Washington Streets. A plaque on the corner in front of the Lyceum tells you the statue commemorates the one hundred Alexandrians who died during the Civil War.
