As other reviewers have said, this isn't a forest as I had imagined, but our family took a nice little stroll along the stroller friendly wooden path. If you'd like to learn about the flora and fauna, be sure to pick up a boardwalk trail guide. I was expecting to see pygmy oaks throughout the entire forest but there was one section that seemed to have a higher concentration of the dwarf trees and made for a nice little resting spot under the short statured trees and their shade.
First I have to say that this isn't really a "forest." It's more of a wooded trail surrounded by trees and nature. It is very beautiful, though. Located in Los Osos, the trail starts out by choosing from two different paths. If you choose to go left, the walk is not as strenuous, but if you go left it is harder with an uphill climb that can be difficult if you are not in shape. There are benches to stop and rest, but no restrooms, so make sure to go before you head out.
What a great walk with or without the kids. There are fabulous views and benches to sit along the way for a snack lunch. The walk is very mild, no hills that I can remember so it is also a good place to go with older parents. There are no bathrooms, though, so be careful on the water intake! The surrounding community is nice as well.
The Elfin Forest is located in Los Osos, CA, with entrances off the North end of 15th and 16th streets off Santa Ysabel (handicapped entrance is on 16th). Their are guided walks through the forest the 3rd Saturday of every month which begin at 9:30 am and meet at the entrance to the forest on 15th street. The boardwalk is so much fun to take the kiddos walking on, and has exceptional views of the bay. It's also wide enough for a double jogging stroller! :) We like to look for different wildlife and coastal habitats for the critters.
