"Where the elite eat in their bare feet"
Take a virtual tour of the restaurant or see the Live Gator Cam at http://thecrabshack.com/gator-cam.html.
This is one interesting and totally unique place to take the kiddos!
There are just under 80 live alligators in an enclosed pond in front of the restaurant. For $3, we bought a bag of gator food, baited a hook on cane fishing poles and dangled the bait for the gators to eat. When we were there, the gators were sleepily sunning themselves and not too interested in the bait but it was a blast trying to get them to take a bite.
There was a short wait for a table so we wandered around in the gift shop and saw all sorts of parrots in the aviary.
There are lots of cats wandering around the property which adds to the charm.
The Crab Shack has a good selection of regional seafood and bbq choices. The wait staff was helpful when we were unsure of what to order. We ordered a bit of both and were not disappointed. There's tons of food and plenty to share!
We chose to sit outside rather than in one of the screened in dining areas but every table seems to have an interesting view. This is truly a casual restaurant and oh so much fun.
There are so many unique things about this place that make it a must see on your visit to Tybee Island.
Disclaimer: We received a complimentary lunch and a bag of gator food. As always, the opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Being from the Midwest, we did nto quite know what to order! Interesting very "outdoorsy" themed place; outside eating, garbage cans in the tables, etc. The gator lagoon when you first arrive is very neat, and you can feed them from a hook, parking is at a premium, arrive early or be prepared to wait.
The most fun we had on Tybee Island was probably at the Crab Shack. We actually made a 2nd visit on our way out of town, because our 3 year old requested to feed the alligators again!
We visited the Crab Shack on a Friday night and waited about an hour to be seated. Lucky for us, traveling with a 3 and 8 year old, there was plenty to look at and do while we waited!
The Shack is mostly outdoors with a roof over the dining area. The waiting area consists of benches around an enclosed baby alligator pond. For only a couple dollars you can purchase food and feed the alligators using a "fishing pole" My children LOVED feeding the gators!
There is also a gift shop you may visit while waiting, inside are some bird cages with talking parrots. Friends of ours visited the gift shop on the way out, because they just HAD to buy some of the hand scrub soap carried exclusively at their restaurant.
The menu selection was limited, however the server was very friendly and the food was good.
