Many, many wonderful pieces of Art. From sculptures, to photography, to glass, and paintings. They have recently put in this great room called the Snow room. My six year old absolutely loved it! They have scavenger hunts and word puzzles for the children to do as you go through, and they are rewarded on the way out with a nice little gift bag. I love taking my boys there. Well organized, neat and friendly!
The museum’s vast collection includes textiles, ceramics, bronzes, and paintings from pre-Columbian, African, and Asian artists, plus an array of European paintings and American art from the seventeenth to the twentieth centuries. A highlight of the museum’s notable glass collection (in the Contemporary Glass Gallery) is the many Tiffany items with their lush and elaborate designs. Kids also appreciate the prints of Norfolk by famous photographers such as Ansel Adams and Alfred Stieglitz.
Young visitors can go on a treasure hunt to see what they can find among the exhibits. Musical happenings in the summer include “The Art of Jazz” Wednesday nights and the “Cool It” concert series on Thursdays year-round. And check out Family Days and Holiday Fest activities.
The Chrysler Museum manages two historic houses in downtown Norfolk. The Moses Myers House (757-441-1526) takes visitors into the world of a prosperous eighteenth-century merchant and his family. (Seventy percent of the items in the house are original to the house.) Children will enjoy watching the ongoing archaeological activities at the house and seeing some of the items that have been discovered.
The Willoughby-Baylor House (757-441-1526) has been fully renovated as the Norfolk History Museum, with changing exhibits highlighting Norfolk’s maritime and military heritage, as well as its decorative arts. Hands-on activities and special tours are offered with the exhibits.
The Chrysler’s Cuisine & Company Restaurant is open for lunch, and its museum shop has kid-friendly toys and books.
