As we walked up to the ferry dock, the lady standing there asked us what ferry we wanted. “What are our choices?” Apparently, there are two choices. A very, very short roundtrip straight across the river to Algiers or an hour long round-trip up and across the river to Gretna. I figured we had time to kill and it might be nice to see some of New Orleans from the river, so I replied Gretna. “Hop on” she said. The ferry (free!) was just about to depart.
The girls and I wandered around the decks and found a nice place to stand and observe as the ferry headed up to Gretna. On the trip back, we found some seats and kicked back and relaxed in the sunshine.
Can’t beat a free boat ride on the Mississippi!
Want to ride on the river but don't want to pay for a paddle boat cruise? Just ride the ferry. The canal street ferry is free for passengers. It travels between Canal Street and Algiers point. There isn't a lot to do over there (a few good spots to eat) but the free trip is a fun way to get out onto the Mississippi. If you take your car, the ride back is $1.
