Tennessee Valley is an amazing offshoot of the Marin Headlands, with hiking trails that suit the whole family. The Tennessee Valley Trail is mostly level; it begins at the parking area and travels 1.7 miles to Tennessee Beach.

We had our Dutch family visiting and with 10 people in a relatively small house, we needed to find things to do outside, stretch legs and shake off some of that pent up energy! We LOVED this hike! It's close by, easy to find and easy to do. We didn't go all the way, as we didn't have that much time, but the scenery was breathtaking and impressing enough to entertain and excite all the kids. Next time, I am bringing the bikes to ride on the hard, car free road...
This is a great hike. It's about two miles to the beach. My two year old can run almost the whole way there. The best thing is that it's stroller friendly the entire way. I use my double stroller and there are lots of families out there doing the same. This is NOT somewhere you want to let your child wander into the water though. The drop off into the ocean is very steep and we only let him in while we hold his hands. There is a little pool of warmer water that the kids can play in though without being held. I like to bring beach toys for digging in the sand and it's the best place for a picnic! Don't forget extra clothes for your wet kids!
What a beautiful hike to the beach. This can be very romantic or something to check out if you are visiting but it is a MUST! My husband and I planned the walk perfectly. We checked with the sun was setting and headed out to Tennessee Valley. The 'hike' (I use that term loosely because there is hiking but to the beach it is more like a walk) was 1.5 miles to the beach and 1.5 miles back, for a totally of 3 miles. We took a blanket and sat on the beach as the sun set over the ocean. BEAUTIFUL!
This hike is great for families with grade school aged kids because they can make it to the end...it is the perfect distance for them! It starts out paved and then you take the major gravel path on your right! It is a beautiful walk (or jog if you are up to it!). The path splits several times and you can take the challenging path (to your right each time) or the flat path (to your left).
The path itself if well maintained, you can easily make it out there in Converse, but athletic shoes always work a little better. There are often puddles on the trail so don't wear new shoes or your "Sunday" clothes. Jogging strollers (with the bike like tires) can make it to the beach, but not your umbrella or city strollers.
The best part of this hike the beach at the end! Kids love playing in the surf, but beware it is not fun to walk back with wet tennis shoes!
It can be chilly as the wind whips through the valley, so bring long sleeves, even on the warm days!
This is a fun hike for the whole family. The trail is flat and leads you out to the beach where you can have loads of fun playing in the sand and water. It's about 3 miles roundtrip from the parking lot. In the spring, the beautiful wildflowers are in bloom. It's a popular trail among hikers and bikers so you'll likely have lots of company. Despite that, it's a fun and easy hike for the kids. There's not a lot of shade so bring a hot, lots of water, sunscreen and picnic or snacks. Also, the weather can vary so be prepared with layers. If your kids don't like to be wet, bring a change of clothes in case they play in the water, so they can hike back dry. No dogs are allowed on the trail.
