My boys really enjoy going on the street cars. We try to make a trip a few times year, but it seems like the most fun to us when we go during the crazy winter months. We get on at Channelside and ride to Ybor. Wander thru Ybor and then get back on and go back to Channelside and enjoy lunch. The Streetcar drivers are always friendly and the cars are very clean...it's a fun diversion from the hustle and bustle for us.
Not many cities have zippy yellow, fully air-conditioned streetcars that clank their way around, but Tampa invested $53 million in a new 2.3-mile streetcar track linking downtown, the Channelside District, and Ybor City. Opened in October 2002, it boasts eight shiny streetcars, duplicates of the original Birney cars that traversed Tampa until their demise in 1946. This is a fascinating expedition for kids, many of whom have never been on a real streetcar, relatively cheap, and perfect for families who want to leave their cars behind and walk around town. Streetcars go right past the Florida Aquarium and through Ybor City.
