My daughter and I came to Talbot's Cyclery to purchase her first real bike. Since the Cyclery is roughly the same size as a normal bike shop, I figured the selection would be amble and we would walk out with new wheels (pink, of course).
To our dismay, Talbots only had ONE girls bike in my daughters size. It was pink, but not what we were looking for.
Perhaps we came on an off day, but I was quite disappointed that a children's bike shop would only have 1 bike to choose from. Weird.
My son is CRAZY about trains. I mean CRAZY. He learned to recognize numbers at a young age, but only because the Thomas trains have numbers (at least the main characters). Anyway, Talbots has a fabulous train table where kids can play for hours. Once they get tired of playing with the trains, they can watch the electric trains go by on overhead tracks in the hobby section. And, if you happen to want to buy a train, they have a good selection of trains which gets refreshed on a fairly frequent basis.
All this is not to say that they only have trains. They have a great selection of other toys, books, art supplies, and baby products. Talbots will not have every brand that you'll find at a large toy store like Toys R Us, but if you're like me, you'll appreciate that. It's way less overwhelming, and they seem to do a really good job editing their lines so that they just carry the good stuff in each category. My last few purchases here that weren't trains: frog umbrella, Lego Duplos, and a toddler bike helmet.
I buy lots of presents here. I might be able to find things a little cheaper on line, but they do free gift wrapping and have a really friendly staff. Those extra touches (plus the train table) will have me coming back over and over.
Talbot's has everything: An extensive train and collectible area, a bike shop, world-class dolls, outdoor play structures, costumes, games, books, strollers, you name it! We love to take the train up to San Mateo and spend several hours in Talbots, especially on a rainy day. In the back room, there are several train tables, play houses, doll houses, electric trains and remote-controlled cars for the kids to play with (and chairs for onlooking parents). Prices are competitive and service is unbeatable!
It is always nice to patronize a local store, and this is a good one. It includes toys, baby supplies, trains and bikes. They have a huge collection of hobbyists' trains as well as bike sales and repair and many toys and gifts. They also do free gift wrapping, so it is a very nice place to stop by, make a price limit you want to spend, choose something great for your recipient, and have it wrapped right there!
If you're looking for a place to buy toys Talbot's is your place. They have everything imaginable and lots of samples for the kids to play with. The train area has running trains overhead, and there's a section with the Thomas and Frineds play tables set-up; everytime we go the kids spend time there. There's a bike shop, a big book area, lego displays, etc... If you buy a gift for someone they offer free wrapping. It's fun to go even you don't buy anything.
