I feel so lucky that we have a drive-in in our community - and there is even one down in Santa Maria too! It is so much fun to bring the kids! The last time we went I had my 3 year old daughter and 2 month old son!! We saw Shrek the 4th and it was perfect to be able to go see it and not have to worry about my son crying and ruining the movie for everyone else! I even put him in a carrier when he got fussy, walked around, and had my headphones & mp3 player tuned into the station for the sound.
Some suggestions...
-Bring your own food!! Pizza, beer, fun times.
-Bring blankets & dress warm!!! It does tend to get cold! We usually go in the back of our truckbed with a shell and get all cozy with sleeping bags & pillows.
Have fun!! Drive-ins seem to be fewer and far between!
We enjoy taking our kids here and the cousins when they come up to visit.
Some friendly tips...
1. Make sure you bring lots of pillows and blankets and sweatshirts and warm cozy stuff
2. Before you go, turn your car to the accessory option so the radio plays and see if when you pop the rear hatch or if you plan on having a door open that it doesn't ding or make noise because our Mazda minivan dings when the rear hatch is open. This gets too annoying for me to watch a movie with that going on. If this is the case point your car forwards and watch through your wind shield or sit outside in lawn chairs.
3. Bring flash lights or glow sticks so your kids are easier to spot running around the parking lot.
4. There is no playground like the one we used to go to as kids.
5. The food is typical movie theater food, expensive, salty and fatty.
6. When the movie is winding up towards the end get your kids inside your car as this place turns really hazardous for little ones really fast with everyone starting their cars and heading to the exit.
We have gone to the drive in several times. you can just imagine you are "back in the day" before they had indoor movie theatres. The double features are also a great way to get more for your money! The kids love cuddling up with a blanket in the back of the van to watch a movie from the car! Better during the colder months when it gets darker than the summer only because the kids get too tired for the films in the summer.
This is something my hubby & I used to LOVE to do before we started our family. We recently were saying how excited we are to be able to take our son in the not so far away future as he would probably enjoy it!! It is really a fun family thing to do. Make sure to take your pillows and blankets to snuggle in your car. And of course, lots of goodies :)
My son has yet to sit through an entire movie, so the Sunset Drive-In in SLO is the perfect place to take him! We usually open the back hatch of our SUV and get comfy with blankets and pillows. I also bring a couple toys for my son for when he starts to get restless. Our whole family can enjoy seeing a movie on the big screen without worrying about bothering other people. It's great!
If you have never taken your kids to the drive-in, you have to give it a try. It is the easiest way to see movies with kids. First, it is so cheap! It costs $5 for adults to get in, often they do not even count all the kids, and you get to see two movies for that price. You can bring in whatever snacks and drinks you want (excluding alcohol). You could do a full-on tailgate party before the movies start. On warm days, most people sit in lawn chairs, the backs of pick-up trucks (complete with air mattresses, pillows, and pjs), or turn the SUV or mini-van facing away from the screen and pop the rear hatch and sit in the back. You do not have to worry about your kids bothering anyone else and if they get tired, they can just fall asleep in the car.
Classic fun reminding me of times gone by. The theater still offers a few speakers that you can hook up to your car and listen through, even though it's much better to use the surround sound of your vehicle to listen to the movie. It's also so much fun to bring a bunch of chairs and blankets and watch movies under the stars. If you want to purchase popcorn or other theater goodies they're available at the concession stand, but you can also bring your own food- a big perk! I love that they show 2 movies for the price of one, but it can make for a late night, so be ready to transport your sleeping kids to their carseats for the drive home. :)
