On our way home from Omaha we decided to swing by Ashland to see the Strategic Air and Space Museum. It was a fantastic idea and worth every minute!
I was surprised by how many jets this museum had and the number of exhibits. My son had a blast. Some of the exhibits are interactive, the kids can climb inside or sit at the command center/flight trainer center. There is a small area for younger kids (slide, things to climb in and on) so this place gets a cool for all ages (assuming they are space or aircraft lovers).
The docents are friendly and full of information. There are restrooms, parking is free, there is a cafe inside (think quick service). We drove on to Ashland to eat before heading home so I can't comment on the prices or quality of food.
I grew up near Bellvue NE and remember F-100s flying over. I also took field trips to SAC as a kid, and this space museum is an amazing collection of planes, rockets and memorabilia. I was amazed at how much my kids loved this place. We flew paper airplanes in the hangar surrounded by historic aircraft. The book store is a a must see.
We went there with our children (ages 8, 6, 4, and 1) during the week after school had started. Not many people were there so it was easier to keep track of a 1 year old that likes to wander. The older children liked walking around and under and close enough to touch the aircraft and this was easier to do with the place mostly to ourselves. The only drawback was we could not enter any of the aircraft. There is a little play place and two rides. Our family is not really interested in airplanes but we found this place more interesting than The Museum of Flight in Seattle. Another plus was that the whole museum was indoors and air conditioned. There is a gift shop and a place to get some hot food & cold drinks.
