"Families ARE in Heaven!"

Families are in Heaven!  I kept thinking this as we spent the day exploring Stone Mountain and the newest feature, the Geyser Tower.   A day at this park can be as low key as a picnic by the lake or as intense as a day at Disney.  Stone Mountain is only 15 miles outside of the city of Atlanta.  Although you feel a world away from the city, you can actually see the metropolis from the top of the mountain.

My husband and I along with our three kids ages 6, 4, and three months (along with my step-mom and her two kids ages 16 and 14) had the best weather the month of April offers in GA.  We tried to cram everything into the day and yet didn’t even make it to the top of the mountain over the 10 hours we spent at the park.

As you enter the park, you are required to pay a parking fee of $10 per vehicle.  This alone gives you access to all of the walking trails (including the trail to summit Stone Mountain) and the evening Laser Show (which is not shown every night so be sure to check the schedule before you go).  All of the attractions fall under one pass, the Adventure Pass, which is an additional fee: adults (12 and up) $28, children (3-11) $22.  The Adventure Pass is all encompassing including the Geyser Tower, Sky Hike, Train Ride, Plantation and petting zoo, The Barn and more!

We started our day with a walk along a shaded path to the plantation; a grouping of 17 buildings, taking you back in time.  The buildings and homes are furnished as they would have been in their time period.  The kids loved seeing the children’s rooms and the toys they would have played with.  In the back corner of the plantation is a small petting zoo.  Sheep, goats and pigs make up this tiny zoo.

A quick stop at the Great Barn could be an all day excursion unto itself.  The kids were thrilled to find a four story playspace inside!  Complete with foam balls and ball launchers, a slide from the top to the bottom and so much more will provide much entertainment for all.  Adults are welcome to play with the kids and to top it all off, it’s air conditioned!!

Now would be a good time to mention that bathrooms were plentiful and clean!  I was truly amazed at the frequency of the bathrooms.  I also found plenty of spaces to change a diaper!  While there are picnic benches and lawns all around if you would like to bring your own lunch, there are also quite a few options for eating - sit down or cafeteria style.

The main area of the park where several of the attractions are located is called Crossroads.  This is where you will find the Geyser Tower.   Yes, there is water shooting up into the air!  Yes, it is a tower!   This attraction must be at it’s absolute peak during the hot days of the summer!  As you climb three stories up a net tunnel, the mist from the geyser is already cooling you off.  This tower is truly a giant jungle gym.  There are height minimums for children to participate...but no height limit! Adults are free to play and cool off along with the kids.  Children can wear bathing suits on the attraction and I highly recommend it.  I would also recommend that girls wear shorts over their bathing suits as the entire structure is made out of rope and a rope burn would not make for a good day.  I did think ahead and brought bathing suits (and towels and a change of clothes) but completely forgot the water shoes.  Not good...the kids walked around in wet shoes for the rest of the day.  Add that to your list when you go!

While the Geyser Tower is not as entertaining as I expected, the kids had a blast.  There is one main pit as you climb up the tower where the water shoots through.  You will truly only get wet if you are in this central netting.  It reminded me so much of a mosh pit with kids running wild through the center, usually with their eyes closed, bumping into each other.  But, because there is only one main section where you get wet, every kid is in it and it gets crowded!

Beneath the tower, and main pit, is a splash pad where the water shoots up into the Tower.  The kids can run around the geyser itself and play away from the masses above.  For the adults that prefer to observe, there are benches and stroller areas within the Geyser Tower area as well as a few benches on the outside.

After a relaxing 5 mile train ride around the park, my six year old got his wish for the day and we took him to the Sky Hike.  A quarter mile of suspended bridges, ropes and climbing nets gets your heart racing as you maneuver through this course while strapped into a harness.  You can choose your level - working up from beginner all the way to four stories up in the air.  I found that children are more relaxed than the adults and walk without fear through the air!

We finished the day with a picnic on the great lawn and the well known Laser Show!  The Laser Show is a combination of concert and drive in movie theatre.  With many of the songs we know, a lasers are projected onto the side of the mountain to form moving shapes and figures.  We had been told earlier in the day by an employee that the show is all new this year.  Even if it had been the same old show, we would have gone as it is truly entertaining.  The kids loved it.  I will warn you that it’s loud (music and fireworks).  Maybe not the best for the younger ones if they are sensitive to noise, but the kids four and older get a huge kick out of it!  We love to take out of town guests to Stone Mountain for the Laser Show alone.  So, be sure you end your day on the great lawn!

Disclosure: I received complimentary wristbands for my family to evaluate Stone Mountain.  I was not required to state any particular view, and all opinions are my own.

"Hiking and the Laser Show"

A hike up Stone Mountain is always a family favorite outdoors adventure.  Our daughter has hiked up to the top with no assistance on several occasions.  We always make an effort to bring a camera and take beautiful photos once we reach the top.  During the summer and fall, make sure to take in the laser show.  It is awesome!

"Stone mountain"

Stone Mountain Park is a must see family destination, just outside of the bustling city of Atlanta. The laser show is awesome, and the park itself is an oasis of nature in a large metro area.
It's the best family value around, see the laser show and enjoy the park all for $7 parking fee! Don't even bother buying attraction tickets, the park has more than enough to do for free. "Climbing" the mountain is easy and rewarding, bring water, and allow a couple hours for the round trip walk to the top and down. And of cause bring your food with you cause you don't want to go around looking for food.

Be sure to see the laser show, and if you want to do an attraction, see the antique museum, even the kids will enjoy it!

"My kids were too little..."

We visited there when my kids were 3 year old and 1 ½ year old in summer.  They particularly enjoyed riding the train, and we rode it twice.  However, they were too little to enjoy the jungle gym called "Sky Hike" there or other attractions.  We went into "The Great Barn" thinking they would enjoy, but they were scared because of loud noises.  My kids were too little at that time, so we have to go back there when they get a little older.

"Step back in Time"

The activities at Stone Mountain Park are great for the kids. We got a season pass this last year and took advantage of the spring and summer months for visiting the park.

The hike up and down the mountain is challenging, but we're not in great shape ourselves, and two of our kids were 3 & 2 at the time, and we did it. You can do it too!

The customer service at the park is great--they'll often reply "My Pleasure" after helping you.

The Laser Show is great and highly worth the wait until dark! In fact, take your stuff, pick your spot and spend the majority of your wait time exploring the park or playing miniature golf!

"Great day trip."

This is a great day trip.  Hike to the top (best for older kids - it's not for the faint of heart!) or take the train up.  Of course the best part is the laser show that they do on the face of the mountain - definitely worth it to stay for that part!

"Educational and Fun!"

Stone Mountain is a ton of fun for the whole family.  We enjoy hiking around the mountain and staying late for the fireworks and lazer show.  They have a bunch of activities for the kids as well, but it can be pricey.  Be sure you look for coupons before you go!

"Totally Awesome Park"

This park is always a fun time.  So much to do here.  Hiking, walking along the water.  It is fun to visit the little gift shops.  The etching in the side of the mountain is totally amazing.  The most fun we have as a family is taking a picnic dinner and  sitting on the lawn at dusk to watch the lazer light show.  It's so much fun no matter how many times we see it!

"Fun times"

My sorority sisters and I visited Stone Mountain back when I was in college and a sister hood retreat.  There were people of all ages there.  Along with us, there were small kids as well as adults.  Our favorite thing was spreading out a blanket after it got dark and watching the light show on the side of the mountain.  We also liked riding up the side of the mountain on the incline and standing on top of the mountain looking at the city.  It was also very inexpensive!

"Great outdoor entertainment"

Stone Mountain is a great outdoor place for entertainment. It's really good to go visit to explore and hike, as well as go to for special events, like the 4th of July. It is a beautiful outdoor park to visit. There is so many places to picnic, so make sure you pack a picnic lunch or dinner. Also, you can take your dogs to the park, just as long as they are on leash.

"Love this park!"

I love this park so much - it is not as expensive as most parks since you only have to pay to park (go with another family and split the cost!) then you have a day of fun! Your kids can enjoy the play area (cost applies) or just browse all the amazing shops. Hike on top of Stone Mtn (free) and then end your night with a laser show at the mountain (also free). Very family friendly and not too expensive for a day of fun!

"Stone Mountain Park "Rocks""

Great place to take the family. Lots of activities in the park for kids. You can ride up or hike up the mountain or take an amphibious ride on "Ride the Ducks". If you ride the ducks and don't like alot of noise you might want to bring earplugs. After all of that you can sit on the lawn at the base of the mountain and watch the best laser show around.

"Scenic Fun"

This trip was one that was extremely fun for us, and our boys enjoyed it as well. When it is warm outside, they have the beach to play or sunbathe as well. The walk up is fairly easy as it is a pretty gradual slope for the most part. We stayed for the laser show, and it was great fun and definitely kept everyone's attention!

"Nice for older kids"

We live within 2 hours of Stone Mountain, so we try and visit often.  I feel that Stone Mountain is a fabulous destination for families, but if you have small children, bring your stroller!  The train and sky lift are great for kids, but some of the other attractions such as the ropes course are better suited for older kids.  We as a family also really love the laser light show, and sometimes will drive up just for that!  Totally worth it if you are in the area.

"Fun amusement park"

a variety of activities, although no rollercoasters. Reminds me of Silver Dollar City, if you've been there, but smaller. We went July 2010, and had no security stop. I saw people with coolers and such walking around. So if you want to save some extra cash, bring your own lunch and drinks. You can always do part of the park, and stop back by your car. Parking wasnt insane like at the larger parks where you try to remember where you parked....

"great family fun"

We love going to stone mountian during the spring and fall. In the summer it is just too hot. Pack a picnic and make a day of it. There is so much to do. The only thing is that you have to pay to get into the park and you have to pay for every activity you want to to so it can get expensive. The activities are worth the money so we let the kids pick two things that we can all enjoy as a family.
