The Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, fondly known locally as “the Clark,” hasa world-class collection of late-nineteenth-century paintings by Renoir, Monet, Corot, Pissaro, and Degas, among others. Also interesting is a room with paintings by the American artists Sargent, Remington, and Homer. They were contemporaries, and all were celebrated in their time for very different styles and subject matter: Sargent for his exquisite portraits of high-society figures; Remington for his depiction of cowboys and western life; and Homer for his haunting New England sea and mountain scenes. The beautiful grounds are a great spot for a picnic and the band concerts every Tueday in July. Call for the schedule of children’s special events. An extremely popular event with families is the annual Overnight Campout, with access to the museum, a film (this time it was Night at the Museum), followed by ghost stories and smores.
