I spend a good deal of time in downtown Raleigh with my 3 and 5 year old. We usually go back and forth between Marbles (the children's museum) and the life science museum. One day, out of nowhere, my daughter asked to walk around the Capitol. I was surprised, and despite the freezing weather, we headed over. We strolled the grounds, taking in statues, famous quotes, gathering bits of history and enjoying the icy grounds. The entire State Goverment Complex is a great introduction to government and history. The best part is that, besides parking, it's free!
A good place to start your visit to Raleigh is downtown. In addition to the state government complex, you’ll find museums and more. The State Capitol (919–733–4994) is located in the geographic center of downtown. Built in the late 1830s in Greek Revival style, it houses the governor’s office, cabinet offices, legislative chambers, and the state library. The state Legislative Building (919–733–7928) is located across Bicentennial Plaza and is home to the North Carolina General Assembly. Devoted solely to the legislative branch, the General Assembly gives visitors an opportunity to view the legislative process.
