Since 2001 new security procedures have been instituted for the State Capitol Building. On weekdays access is through any entrance, at which you will be screened and provided with a visitor’s pass. On weekends and holidays access is only through the front of the building, on Third Street at State. In 2006 our beautiful State Capitol Building celebrated its one-hundredth birthday.
The dome of the State Capitol Building is said to be the most impressive one of any state capitol in the country. Inside, huge murals depict scenes such as Penn’s treaty with the Native Americans, the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and Washington’s troops at Valley Forge. The floors are made of tiles from the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works in Doylestown (see entry under Philadelphia Countryside). The main floor of the rotunda displays more than 350 flags formerly carried by regiments from Pennsylvania.
In the East Wing visit the eighteen interactive exhibits of the welcome center, including a kinetic sculpture that depicts how a bill becomes law.
