This is a great place to start before going in to the North Cheyenne Canyon Park. It has dioramas, hands on exhibits, and free maps of the area.
This is a super fun place to take little kids who you are training to be avid hikers. First stop is the visitor's center where you can get free trail maps, play with the interactive displays upstairs and down, make a pit stop at the restrooms, and learn about the area from the friendly and informative volunteers. Next, meander along one of the trails that begin at the center. Through the woods, along the streams, and over mostly flat trails. Bring the sandals and swimsuits for the kids to dip their feet in the water and splash around - there are numerous opportunities to do this along the trails. Pack a picnic lunch and walk a short ways to the picnic pavilions to dine while listening to the sounds of hummingbirds and water flowing. Spectacular, easy to maneuver trails of varying distances for budding hikers with lots of vegetation to see along the way. Check out the flyers inside the center to see all of the planned activities at the center for some extra fun!
This nature center offers all sorts of educational opportunities for kids and families. There is a climbing wall, a bird watching window, and all sorts of hands on discovery activities for kids. My kids love the sandbox where you can make tracks with animal prints and the boxes with phosphorescent rocks that glow in many different colors! There are also really knowledgeable folks running the place that can help you plan a great day hike.
