A new and improved version of the original Star Tours attraction filled with 3-D thrills and 54 different versions of fun!
Minimum height: 40"
We didn't ride Star Tours until the second day of our 2-day visit to Disneyland, and I wish we'd done it earlier so that we could have gone more! This is a great virtual experience with wonderful 3D graphics. Each ride is a little different, and on each ride one person is randomly picked as the rebel spy. My 4-year-old son was picked the first time we went on it!
My husband and I loved this ride and our son loved it too. Great fun for the whole family, especially if you're a Star Wars fan. It's a do not miss!
Star Tours is much improved with the new destinations and 3D effects during the ride. I nearly knew the old ride by heart, but after riding the new Star Tours, I knew that I could be surprised every time! With 3 rides under our belt, we visited the ice planet Hoth, raced in the Pod Race, and flew into Coursant. (I only know all those names from my StarWars loving family members!).
Tips on parent passes and FastPass:
We got FastPasses at the beginning of the day which gave us a sooner window to return than if we had waited longer. While waiting, we enjoyed Autopia, Finding Nemo Sub Voyage, Buzz Lightyear Astro Blaster, and the Jedi Training Academy, because the whole family could enjoy all of those attractions.
We asked for Rider Switch Passes at the start of the line when we returned for our FastPass time because only half of the adults could go while the others waited with the little kids.
On our return with the Rider Switch Passes, we were confused when we were placed in the FastPass line and had to wait like all the other Fastpassers (about 5 minutes). We though that the switch passes got you right on. After asking a Cast Member, we learned that each ride has their own method with Rider Switch because of how the ride is loaded. Star Tours only loads on one side and so Rider Switch Passes have to be used in the FastPass line.
Bottom Line: because we had FastPasses AND Rider Switch Passes, some people in our group got to ride twice through the FastPass line. It pays to ask for Rider Switch Passes when you have to switch off going on rides because of little kids!
The highlight of my 5 and 8 year old's recent trip to Disneyland was jumping on board the newly refreshed Star Tours ride. I always remembered enjoying this ride before, but now in 3D and with more endings then you could ever watch unless you're a local with an annual pass, Star Tours was incredibly exciting. Even our 5 year old who is still terrified of rides like Peter Pan cracked a big smile at the end of the ride when we splashed into the waters of Naboo. Our 8 year old summed up the ride with "Wow! That was so cool!" would have stood inline all day to go on every tour he could squeeze. I dare say, there are going to be a few Star Wars manics who will buy a Disneyland annual pass just to see all 54 endings before the year is up. I loved all the updated graphics and inclusion of characters and scenes from the newer Star Wars movies.
For Star Wars fans both big and small, this ride is the closest that most of us will ever get to experiencing a pod race in person, a flight through an asteroid belt, or weaving swiftly through on coming enemy space craft. You'll be rocked and shaken, and your eyes will be tricked into believing that for a few moments you are part of George Lucus' world that has captured so many of our imaginations.
Fortunately or unfortunately, the lines for the new ride are really long. I say fortunately, because for those of us who are prone to motion sickness when being jostled around in a space craft, it might just be enough time to recover before your next tour to another planet. If you want to make sure you get at least two tours in before the end of the day, make sure to grab a fast pass before standing in line, so you don't have to stand in line twice.
Disclosure: I rode this ride as a member of the media attending the grand opening. Disneyland did not ask that I express any particular opinion and all opinions are entirely my own.
I knew going on this ride would probably make me sick. In the past, motion simulators have made me queasy, but I really wanted to check out the new ride, especially since it is now in 3D! Sure enough, I was nauseated for a couple hours after the ride (but playground swings make me queasy) but it was COMPLETELY worth it.
The ride uses the same motion machine as the previous Star Tours, but the storylines include the more recent Star Wars movies (Episodes 1-3) and feature 54 possible scenarios. Plus, its all in 3D!
It was easy to get caught up in this ride. The effects were so realistic, I really felt like I was flying at light speed through the galaxy. The ride definitely moves around quite a bit, but never felt jerky or uncomfortable. I didn't find the ride to be scary, but young children who don't like darkness or suspense might frighten a bit. I am confident that my four year old son would love it as well as my 36 year old husband and 12 year old niece. In other words, this ride appeals to most demographics.
One of the coolest things they have done with this ride is flash a picture of a spy on screen which happens to be one of the passengers on the simulator. They must take a picture of someone in line before hand. It is pretty fun to watch the kid picked squeal with delight when he sees his face on the Star Tours 3D screen.
Bottomline: I think its worth going on this ride at least once, even if you have motion sickness tendencies. It was that fun.
