"Great Nature Getwaway in the City"

This 87-acre public garden is filled with plants representing more than 2,000 different species from places as far away as Australia and southern Africa. Garden highlights include a children’s garden, vegetable garden, succulent garden, a lake, redwood grove and a garden for the senses. Which boils down to this: It’s a big enough place that little explorers will have plenty to see, smell and touch. And keep an eye out for wildlife: We saw plenty of bunnies on our visit.

A couple of suggestions:

Spend a while in the children’s garden. Kids will love the fairies, dragons and gnomes waiting to be discovered. I loved the “silly pot garden,” alphabet garden and water pump.

Let the kids lead. Gardens are for strolling, wandering and meandering. Together, we picked a few must-see spots and enjoyed the journey to get there.

Garden pathways are a combination of paved roads, dirt roads and trails. Flush toilets available just inside front entrance; additional portable toilets can be found throughout the gardens.

"Nice place to wander about"

This is a great place to bring the kids and let them wander about while taking in the sights and smells of the various specialty gardens. It's built on an old landfill. You wouldn't know it. Once you're there, you feel like you're not in LA anymore. At the SCBG, there is an adorable Children's Garden. There used to be children's activities with story time, crafts, etc., but they've been unfortunately discontinued. My son really enjoyed the few that we did attend. He got to make some neat crafts, learn about spiders and see the webs in the garden and plant a small plant.

Another highlight for my son was when the garden held a train show one weekend where miniature trains were featured. We have to yet to attend some of the other functions that the garden offers, such as kids' concerts.

We got a membership and with that get reciprocal benefits at other gardens nationwide. So far, we've been to the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix.
