i truly wanted this to be a destination that we "revisit" - being of swedish decent, i had high hopes for this tiny little town! and maybe it's my fault i didn't read up enough about it before we went...i was expecting a little more learning and less tourist shopping. we all have the picture of our children in the red phone booth, the dutch windmill and eating some sweet treat from the bakery....i just wish there was more there. it's definitely "a stop on your way to somewhere" - just don't let solvang be your final destination...
How wonderful it was for my family to travel to Solvang, CA. What a great community! The people were so friendly. The windmills were classic architecture of the land. Clogs were sold in almost every store. There was even a giant wooden clog that was a great photo opportunity. Homemade ice cream parlors were everywhere. Little mom & pop souvenir shops occupied every inch of the main street. It was a great getaway that the family enjoyed.
wanna visit europe in a very tight budget?? Solvang, CA is a very cute small danish town (ranging from free if you just want to visit, to about hundreds buck per day if you and family wanna stay over). It is very near to highway 101 CA the scenic route. it's about 2 hours north LA, in sunny Santa Barbara. My little one really enjoy the picnic we set up here. Then we tried Solvang Trolley, it is non electric, it is truly wooden streetcar pulled by horses. One of the event we anticipate for this year is Danish Days hold Sept. 16 - 18th 2011. Last year was the 17th-19th, and my niece was sooo interested in the street dance, it was colored with their national color of red and white. We found their color in their costumes, ribbons, balloons, everything. The best costume of the event was the viking of course. We also tried the aebleskiver eating contest. it is a traditional pancake balls but strangely fluffy like a puff. The restaurant owner told us it is traditionally eaten to welcome the Christmas season. Then there also was children parade before the closing of the festival. I heard there are free friday night Movies every summer in Solvang Park. But the funnest for us was Ostrich Land where we fed ostriches and emus. My niece tried to ask whether she can ride one, but daddy said no. She's too small my brother said. oh well next time. my suggestion, check the website for calendar of events.
