Ski resort with terrain park and other activities, such as ice skating, nordic skiing, and backcountry opportunities. Solitude has a unique pass that allows you to buy passes by the "ride" up the lift, as well as by the day or season.
For 31 years I have lived within view of some of the most beautiful mountains. I would drive around with license plates that were tagged with “The Greatest Snow on Earth!” Ski shops are abundant here. The Winter Olympics even stopped by. No wonder whenever I was out of the state and people asked where I was from the next question would be, “Do you ski?” The answer from this native Utahn….”Nope.”
The chance to learn had just never happened. My husband had never been skiing and what was looming for our children? A skiless future. The story could end here and be very sad, but it does not. The hero in this story: Solitude Ski Resort.
Solitude Ski Resort is an easy 20 minute drive from downtown Salt Lake City. I was given the opportunity to take my family up to Solitude Ski Resort with the promise that we were going to learn to ski. My husband and I in our 30’s and my 4 year old all went with the hopes that we would be skiiers by the end of the day.
Upon arriving we found the rental center. The staff there was awesome in helping us get the equipment we needed and making sure that everything fit just perfect. This was very nice, as we had not a clue what we were doing. After a few minutes we were equipped and ready.
Play Academy:
We opted to leave our 2 year old behind with a relative, however, had we brought him this resort offers something called play academy. It is basically babysitting, but better. They offer indoor activities, lunch, outdoor snow play, stories, and more. The room is secure and there is no worrying about the little ones while out on the slopes.
Ski and Play Program:
Our 4 year old got to participate in the Ski and Play program. The all-day hours were from 9 until 4, which gave us plenty of time to ourselves. Our biggest worry was that she would be bored in a few hours and the fun would be done. Not so. She entered a secure door that remains locked until opened by the staff for parents. All her things went into a tote and she was off to play with other kids in a room full of toys and activities. As a part of the program Erin would be given lessons and a chance to ski two times that day. When we were out learning and skiing I kept an eye out for her. I did not see her in the morning as I kept my eye out on the little inclines of snow we had started on. Little did I know she was on the big beginner’s hill really learning how to ski. She was paired up one-on-one with a fabulous young lady named Maggie who took Erin up on the lift, and down the mountain several times.
When we finally caught up to Erin later that day I found her wearing fairy wings over her coat. She told me that they made her ski faster. It was great to see that the care was in making sure the children had a good time. At one point I tried to get a picture of her getting on the lift with her instructor. The lift operator was so helpful and friendly that he offered me a better position to get the shot. Everyone was super helpful and friendly. Erin also was treated to play time in the snow and yummy lunch. She absolutely loved the Ski and Play program and we would not hesitate placing her there again.
Ski Academy:
Really I had begun to think that learning to ski was probably never going to happen for me. I kept imagining that it would be similar to me trying to pick up skateboarding and would be a disaster. However, that day I learned anyone can learn to ski.
Solitude offers many options when it comes to learning how to ski including different packages for either groups or individuals. An army ski instructors, led by an extraordinary man named Leif, was ready for those willing to learn. Mike would be our brave teacher that day. Not only was Mike knowledgeable, but he was truly a great teacher. I remember as we started I looked up a rather large hill and thought I would never get to that point this day…two hours later I was at the top of that very hill. Mikes instruction style was very natural and everything just came together unrushed and perfect. He kept up the humor and there was not a moment left for frustration at all. I only fell one time during my whole instruction.
The Resort
After we graduated from the ski academy we were allowed to take the rest of the day and ski on the beginner slopes. We took the lift up and skied into the ski village and ate a delicious lunch at the Stone Haus. They had a great offering of sandwiches and pizza. The food was a little pricy, but doable, and most importantly it very good. The hotel rooms that were a part of the resort had beautiful views. We both agreed it would be worth staying over. Our usual vacation usually involves the beach and the sun, but the whole time while I was there I couldn’t help but think what a fun vacation this would be.
This truly is an amazing resort willing to cater to those that have skiing experience and those who do not. Most importantly this resort is super family friendly. Before this I had never considered a ski vacation, but after our day at Solitude I cannot think about anything else.
Disclosure: Although I received complimentary activities, my reviews are always my own opinions and are not influenced by resort staff or its affiliates
Husband and I went for Valentine's Day. We stayed at the hotel there, woke up and walked over to the lift. Great trails with a variety of skill level. Good for skiiers or snowboarders. Hotel staff was very friendly and courteous. Room was nice and bed was comfortable.
