The Society for Contemporary Craft offers exhibitions focused on multicultural diversity and non-mainstream art, as well as a range of classes, community outreach programs and a retail store.
School Programs
In conjunction with each exhibition, a range of multi-cultural, educational programming is available for students and teachers. Group tours in SCC's galleries encourage seeing, participating in hands-on activities and learning about the innovative use of materials.
Examples of current student programs include "Scavenger Hunts" which help students focus and reflect on the exhibition and "Be the Jury" a behind-the-scenes look at how exhibitions and shows are juried including how the art is selected. All activities meet the Pennsylvania Academic Standards for the Arts and Humanities.
Teachers can learn various methods for incorporating craft into their curriculum. To complement SCC exhibitions, teachers can sign up for studio workshops and earn ACT 48 credit. For more information contact: thestudio@contemporarycraft.org.
The Society for Contemporary Craft (SCC) provides an unusual chance to make art a part of your life. SCC includes an exhibition gallery, an education center, The Studio, and The Store, featuring one-of-a-kind handmade works for all ages.
The gallery stages four craft exhibitions per year. Each exhibition is accompanied by a related artist-designed project that invites families to create art together in the Drop-In Studio. Past visitors have made object jewelry and cereal box–cardboard quilts. Come as you are, and stay until your masterpiece is complete.
More in-depth art experiences are available through studio classes in book arts, fiber, metal, and wood for adults, children, and families. SCC also hosts special family events throughout the year. Both the building and the restrooms are accessible to all visitors.
