The Smithsonian American Art Museum is the nation's first collection of American art with works from the Colonial period to the present.
I visit the Smithsonian American Art Museum with 3 teenagers all of whom were very excited to explore the museum. We were all disapointed. I did not realize how many of the exhibits were "loaned out." We expected to spend a day here and were done within two hours. Maybe it was because we had just traveled from New York and Boston, but I really have to say it was just okay. The Smithsonian is in need of major repairs. Kind of a sad experience.
This museum was incredible. The variety of different things they have is really great. Everyone really enjoyed it. It was rather large, but it was a joy to walk around and see everything. It was definitely a recommendable place. I would love to go back. It was hard for the kids to keep their hands off of some things, but they liked looking at all of the pictures. We are a pretty artistic family, so it fit us well.
I brought my children here mainly for my oldest. This wasnt a good place for my youngest son who wanted to run around and touch the paintings! They did have an Andy Worhol that was cool to see and my oldest son still talks about. Maybe wait until the children are a little older before we will go back! Its a wonderful place, lots of great peices of Art!
The Smithsonian American Art Museum is a beautiful DC museum. It is part of the Reynold's Center which includes the American Art Museum and the National Portrait Gallery. Not only is the artwork amazing and a pleasure to admire, but so is the building architecture. You will be glad you visited!
The American art museum is also known for the portrait gallery of the presidents. It is well laid out and has a HUGE atrium in the middle that was opened only 2 years ago. Inside the atrium are several fountains and a long area to let little feet loose to burn some energy. We found it the perfect place to bring our son and to get some culture at the same time. And as all museums in DC, the price is right!
