Shelby Farms is the one of the largest urban parks in the United States. At approximately 4500 acres it is five times larger than New York City's famed Central Park. Today park visitors enjoy walking, fishing, mountain biking, horseback riding and even inline skating. With plenty of open areas visitors can put down their blankets and watch kites floating on air or kayaks and small sailboats gliding across Patriot Lake. There are 3 playgrounds within Shelby Farms for kids to enjoy. The Lucius E. Burch Jr. State Natural Area comprises approximately 700 acres of wetlands and hardwood forest located in the southern portion of Shelby Farms.
