Shaver's Creek Environmental Center provides a mix of educational and recreational opportunities. Explore the Discovery Rooms, tour the Raptor Center, walk the network of trails and boardwalk over the wetlands at the inflow of Lake Perez, and visit the gardens and bird feeder areas.
There's a lot to do here. The visitor's center has a number of hands-on exhibits where kids can touch various things like animal furs, turtle shells, fossils, etc. There are tanks with various live snakes, turtles, etc. There is a kid's loft where kids climb up an have a special area filled with books, a few costumes, and this great booth they can get into and see a glow-in-the-dark model of the night sky. Outside, you can see the raptors -- Bald & Golden Eagles, various owls, hawks, vultures, etc. There are hiking trails and a lake and it's great for birdwatching. There's a small gift shop with educational type stuff. My 5 year old loves it there and we do, too. Check their website for daily programs and stuff. Their programs are great.
Learn about the local wildlife and how injured eagles, hawks, owls, reptiles, and amphibians are cared for at this lovely environmental center. There’s a bookstore with a good selection of books for children; you’ll also find other wildlife accessories there. Special gardens attract butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds.
Shaver’s Creek is the site of a wonderful day-camp program for children six and up. For children six to eleven, the Discovery and Explorer Camps run from Tuesday through Friday and end up with a family overnight at the camp.
Children twelve and up can choose from several different camp experiences. Raptor and More Camp (in which campers work with rehabilitated birds of prey), is forcampers ages fourteen to seventeen.
