Just went here for the first time today with my 2-year old and 5-year old. Docents and guides are caring and kind, take time to answer questions. Not crowded at all today, came right after a field trip. There isn't a lot to hold the interests of young kids, and the displays are sparse, but this is really a Lab, not an amusement park. The dolphins (seen only on a guided tour) are here for research not entertainment, so don't expect much. The shark touch pool is the highlight for kids, but small kids won't be able to reach. Touch pools for kids and some educational displays for older kids. Beautiful views along the cliffside walk (watch your toddlers!) for adults. Don't make a long special trip, but definitely bring the kids here if you're local.
This University of Santa Cruz research facility, open to the public, features an aquarium, an 85-foot blue whale skeleton, and “touch tanks” where kids can pick up sea animals. Docents take you behind the scenes where scientists do research.
This is a pretty humble little Marine Discovery Center. The tour is really great if you have a chance to take it. You can learn more about how the center studies Marine Mammals. Another plus is the focus on UCSC's research and researchers. The touch pool volunteers are patient and kind. At best a place to while away an hour or two, escape the rain, or attend a special event.
