SciWorks’ 25,000 square feet of exhibit space, 119-seat Planetarium and 15-acre outdoor Environmental Park are able to serve several hundred group visitors at a time, but please schedule early. Time to visit the museum should be scheduled for no less than one hour.
Permanent exhibits include: Foucault Pendulum, North Carolina: Mountains to the Sea, PhysicsWorks, SoundWorks, HealthWorks, BioWorks and KidsWorks. The Environmental Park includes habitats for river otters, deer and waterfowl and a barnyard with goats, sheep, cows, donkeys, and a miniature horse.

My children were only 2 and 4 when we visited this science museum, yet they had a blast. The displays are interactive, so it is enjoyable for small children who may miss some of the scientific detail. Exhibits range from natural sciences, the human body, the science of sound and music, and an interesting section of interactive physics displays. I've never been a fan of physics, so if you can make that section fun ... wow! This is a great educational experience for kids of any age! And it doesn't feel educational!
SciWorks is a mediocre science museum for children. The exhibits, many of which are "under construction" or "undergoing repair" are dated and dirty. Though it is reasonably priced for admission, SciWorks advertises that during the school year, teachers and students with homeschool IDs will be able to get it at the reduced rates that the public school teachers and students enjoy. We were on a (homeschool) field trip to Winston Salem, so we stopped by to take advantage of the homeschool rate. However, it was Veterans Day and public schools were out for the day. Though the website says that the discounted rate applies "during the public school year," they would not offer the discounted admission on this holiday. We had to pay full price for four people, which was expensive on our budget. We asked them to honor what their website states (because it does not except holidays), but they refused an immediate discount and gave us a pass to return another time. Of course, we won't be returning. We would offer a much stronger recommendation to Children's Museum of Winston Salem, which was excellent.
Science lovers will get their fill in Winston-Salem at SciWorks, a 45,000-square-foot science center and environmental park that lets kids and adults alike uncover some of the mysteries of science. Here you can actually do experiments yourself, while staff members put on displays designed to astonish you. You can learn more about the sea at the aquariums, at the touch tank, and through CD-ROM computer programs of undersea adventure. The center also includes a 120-seat planetarium that presents various shows year-round. In addition, you can take a walk or have a picnic in the thirty-four-acre park. Here you’re likely to come face-to-face with a deer or river otter, and the kids get a chance to meet farmyard animals.
We spent at least 4 hours here with our grandchildren who are 5. They loved the mazes, the "Tree" slide, the live snakes, the children's playroom and the movie. Everything is hands on and provide wonderful learning experiences for the children - al ages would find something of fun here. The last time we went, I rode on one of the two wheel mall carts. That was great fun. You have to be over a certain height to do this. The one negative is there is really no food available except cookies and chips. So, if you want to stay all day, you have to take a break and go get something to eat nearby.
It is a combination of a children's museum and science museum with tons to do for the entire family. I have a 2 yr old and he had a wonderful time! My son enjoyed splashing and playing with the "fish" in the river exhibit (plastic fish that you can using fishing poles to catch) and my son enjoyed the planetarium show the most. The human body exhibits are incredible and everything seems to have either a sound or game included. It truly makes learning scientific concepts fun! I would plan at least 2 hours or more to try and see the entire museum!
