Escape a hot summer day with a trip to Sandcastle's mix of twisting and turning slides and water play areas. There is a special kids area for the youngins and the world's largest hot tub to provide relaxation to the masses. And what water park is complete without a lazy river?
While we do like Sandcastle water park, it is located in a bad part of town. I was always a little nervous when we went there last year. There were so many people the last time we went that we got to go on maybe 10 slides all day. The lines were incredibly long and the price was outrageous. The boardwalk was nice, but not much to do with the baby and todder age children. I'm sure if we go again, we will wait until the kids are old enough to go on their own. Hopefully, soon, they will add an area for smaller kids!
You always want to hit the pool on a hot day, hot days here are so busy you can barely ride the water slides and such. The kiddy area is alot of fun and parents can lounge and just watch them if they are old enought to go on their own. Not great for toddler/preschool age. Lazy river is great for adults but kids dont find it as much fun so if you pair up with another family maybe the dads can watch the kids and moms can ride the river or vice versa. The park itself seems very safe, but overall is in a location that is not the best for crime and such. Always a concern for me especially with young kids. Also, check pepsi cans or local grocers usually coupons out for admission.
If you wait til the hottest day in summer you will be sorry. Sandcastle is awesome except when really really busy! Then you stand in really long hot lines. Its small enough that if you bring pre-teenagers--they can walk around themselves without you losing them or them getting into trouble, yet big enough that they don't feel like you are following themm around. The food is pretty good but most certainly bring some snack food in your bag. Def enough places to lay down--chairs and such and grassy areas... look for coupons b/c there are usually some out there esp the beginning of summer
Sandcastle Water Park, Kennywood’s sister park in West Homestead, began life as an abandoned steel mill and was opened as a water park in July 1990. Sandcastle is a major riverside water park with a boardwalk, fifteen water slides, three pools, and a Lazy River. It also has two race-car tracks, video games, and miniature golf. Mon- Tsunami is a 20,000-square-foot wave pool with huge roller waves as well as diamond waves.
Only the bravest watersliders should attempt the Lightning Express twin body slides, 60 feet high and 250 feet long, each with a double dip, followed by a monster free fall. (AAAH!)
Another slide, Cliffhangers, uses a new concept in waterslide design: sky ponds. Each pond is at a different level above the ground. You and your inner tube can float in one pond before sliding down to the next.
