San Pedro Valley County Park offers an array of hiking trails for active families. The Weiler Ranch Road Trail is a 2 mile round-trip trail that is wide and relatively flat. It's also ridable on mountain bikes. Our 8 year old rode his fixed speed bmx bike most of the way, while I rode a mountain bike with an attached extra seat/wheel weeride with my 5 year old.
There are also many other trails, including the scenic but steepish Montara Mountain Trail at 2.1 miles. Hiking along this trail affords you views of the Pacific Ocean and even the Farallon Islands on a clear day.
The Brooks Creek Trail is a short 1 mile trail to Brooks Falls. The Old Trout Farm Trail is a short half miler which takes you around what used to be a trout farm in the creek.
Like many regional parks around the Bay Area, watch out for poison oak (check the signs to see what it looks like) and also beware of mountain lions (rarely seen, but dangerous).
San Pedro Valley park is a great place to take a stroll with the family. The Weiler Ranch Road Trail is wide and relatively flat, easy to take jogging strollers on. Deer graze in the meadow all the time, and rabbits abound so there is plenty to captivate the little ones. The picnic area has some fun climbing trees, and some secluded picnic spots, the perfect way to get away without going to far from the car. The nature center occasionly has programs for youth and adults that are very interesting. On Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010 at 1 PM there will be a show put on for kids from the Tree Frog Treks group, bringing in live animals for the show. Other events can be found at supportparks.org
San Pedro Valley County Park is one of the lesser known parks that has nice trails that families can enjoy. Young children should stay on the flat trails, but older children can walk through the Eucalyptus trail with views of the Pacific Ocean.
